Hair Removal for Men

Hair removal for men is a blossoming industry servicing those who have decided that they do not wish to live with unwanted excess hair.  Men have been removing hair for centuries but generally speaking they have only addressed their facial hair and not that affecting other body parts.  But that trend has changed and now there is plenty of choice available.  Electric razors are fine but not always appropriate for the job in hand.

What other products and services are available? Others forms of body hair removal include waxing, sugaring, electrolysis, creams and laser hair removal.  They can all be performed at home but most people would advise that you use a skilled technician particularly for electrolysis or laser treatments.

Home waxing kits work with cold wax strips and unless you know what you are doing tend to give unsatisfactory results.   You are usually better going to a salon for a professional hot wax treatment particularly if the area in question is hard for you to reach.  The pain level depends on a number of factors not least of which is the skill level of your therapist and the area of skin being treated. A skilled technician will deliver excellent results with less pain and take less time than a trainee.  Some people will take two paracetamol before going to their appointment to help minimize the pain.  During the treatment, the beautician will apply hot wax to the skin.  She will then remove the wax and hair by applying a cloth to the wax and then removing it very quickly.  The quicker she works, the less painful the treatment.   Your skin may look red and pimply when she finishes but this reaction soon disappears.

Sugaring works in a similar way to waxing but as the sugar paste is warm rather than hot, the pain level and skin reaction is usually milder. The disadvantage with this form of treatment is the fact that not all salons offer sugaring as an option.

Electrolysis is another method to get rid of unwanted hair but it is best suited to smaller areas. A trained technician will insert an ultra thin probe into the hair follicle to dispense a small amount of heat to the root. Each hair has to be treated separately thus making it unsuitable for clearing large areas such as the chest or back.  The advantage to this treatment is the fact that the cells that nourish the hair root are destroyed making re-growth weaker over time.   The main disadvantage is the fact it limits the size of the area to be treated and the pain level depends on your sensitivity levels.

Laser hair removal is probably the most efficient form of treatment to get rid of unwanted hair.  There are various types of lasers available. The right one for you will depend on your budget, your skin tone and the area being treated.

This treatment tends to be most successful on pale skinned people with dark hair.  For some forms of laser, you have to be waxed first before it can be used.  It is an expensive form of male hair removal but it is very popular as it works and the prices are becoming more competitive.
