The bodies are actually ‘plastercasts’. Bodies and wooden structures such as furniture and doors were covered in deep very compacted ash. As the bodies or wood decomposed they left behind a hollow cavity. During excavations it was realised that filling these cavities with plaster of paris would make a mold of what had originally been there. A similar process is used in lost wax molding
